Man, Old Man Logan was fantastic. Now we’ve got Old Man Daredevil. Will it hold up? Well, here are my thoughts so far.
Okay, so daredevil cold day in hell number one. What’s it about? Well, after a horrific series of events, of which the specific details are scarce, things are looking bleak. Like there are many more unhoused people in New York way more than normal. Matt Murdock is old, and his powers have faded to nothing. He has a little bit of his skill left, but he’s basically just a normal blind guy. Without spoilers I want to say my one-word impression of issue number one, and that is: Hell-Yeah. Yes, hell-yeah is one word in my book.
So this series is made by Charles Soule, and Steven McNiven. Written by Charles and Illustrated by Steve. Now these two make a fantastic duo, their writing and art just pair together like peanut butter and jelly or Leo Decaprio and anyone under the age of 25. Charles’ writing just brings you right into the world and he knows just how to treat Dare Devil. That is probably because he’s written a handful of daredevil titles, non-the-less he understands and respects the characters. In the world. We don’t see Foggy or Karen anywhere around him in this series it feels like it’s a whole new and changed world.
I’m going to try to avoid spoilers but I just want to gush about this book for as long as possible. The art man, it really captures the gritty world of New York they set up. The muted colors, the shadows, the haunting imagery all just click together. Even the action is top-notch in this short first issue. The writing is dually as impressive as it’s able to tell just an interesting and compelling story, and build a very lived-in world. Which is a hard thing to do. How much do you give away, how much do you keep, and how much fan service do you do? Not that kind of fan service, but like dropping a name, or like, um, killing off an Avenger.
I want to give a nod to the letterer Clayton Cowles. He doesn’t go overboard, he just does just enough to bring you into the story and not let the dialogue boxes be annoying or intrusive. I also really enjoy how he does text outside of the panel and in the gutter. It shouldn’t work but it just does. I’m going to give this a solid, put it on your pull list, and grab a cool variant cover like I did. Alright, Daredevil Cold Day In Hell #1 have you read it? Do you plan on reading it. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section? Okay, bye now.
