Absolute Green Lantern is the 5th title in the absolute universe. It looks great, and there are a few great spreads. The dialogue is good, and it’s written well. However, where Batman and Superman are seen as badass alternate and interesting versions of their character, Hal Jordan is the exact opposite. My adverse reaction might stem from the fact that I expected them to follow the same pattern as Batman and Superman. And maybe that's not fair on my part, but sometimes, being different is good.
I think the two biggest differences between the Batman and Superman title and Absolute Green Lanter is the definitive style/personality for the main character. Hal is sure a bit different, and I mean, he’s an unwilling villain in the first issue. Which is compelling but what I miss from Batman and Superman is it drops us into an interesting and captivating story.
We want to see how Batman got to this point in his life now that he’s not a billionaire, and we want to know the difference in Superman’s upbringing and the interaction with the new version of Lois. This one just doesn’t hit that on the head and suck you in like the other ones do. It kind of spits you into a world without much depth.
That could be because I didn’t read a lot of Green Lantern growing up, and I don’t connect to these characters as much as I do Batman, supes, or the Flash.
I think it’s great that we have a person of color like the green lantern, but villainizing a beloved character is kind of bold and confusing. I know it’s separate continuity, and there is room to grow and evolve in the series, as well as a redemption arc for Hal. Though that means you have to take a ring from a person of color to a white guy, and I don’t think they’ll do that. Maybe he gets a different ring or powers. I don’t know. It just isn’t as fun as the other stories in the series, and I won’t be sticking around to find out. I might pick it up in a trade vol or wait for them to hit discounted back issues. My rating is well put together but disappointing.
